(More customer reviews)I recently purchased Curad Hold Tite Tubular Stretch Bandages due to a severe sunburn I "acquired" on my shins. The blistering left several large wounds, requiring me to cover them with gauze. The largest was just under my right knee, which the box of this item advertises as being difficult to bandage effectively.

The main reason that I purchased this item was due to my wound seeping enough fluid that it would constantly soak through the gauze and covering Ace bandage. This resulted in me needing to launder the bandage; even though I had three, the number of times per day that I have to change the dressings provides some inconvenience.

The Good

The first thing that you may notice about this product is that the box is shrink-wrapped. This is to protect the bandage; you actually pull it from the side of the box, similar to how you dispense kleenex. The bandage comes in a long roll. You simply cut the length that you need. The bandage feeds through the opening easily, with no snags.

Putting the item on is also fairly straight forward. You stretch it first and then pull it over the wounded appendage. The amount that this product stretches is pretty substantial; it should accommodate a wide range of leg/arm sizes.

Finally, the item is comfortable. For women, it feels as though you are wearing fishnet stockings. For men, well if you are into wearing women's clothing, it feels like fishnet stockings. Otherwise, it is a soft, comfortable, and breathable fabric. It is not too tight, and doesn't constrict bloodflow.

The Bad

The purpose of this product is to hold a piece of gauze in place without the need for medical tape. This is a great idea for a burn patient, as using any type of tape can damage the skin further (not to mention hurt badly). However, the efficacy of this product is miserable.

In order for the bandage to remain in place, you need to cut a length that is substantially larger than the gauze. If you only cut enough to extend a small amount past the gauze pad, the bandage will slowly start to shift down your leg. Alternatively, the bandage will roll up, forcing you to re-roll it to cover the gauze pad.

Since the bandage has holes in it, if you have a seeping wound that soaks through the gauze, the bandage will ooze openly. The fabric will absorb what it can, however, if you are wearing pants over the bandage, you will find them stained with the fluids from the wound.

The Verdict

While I think the idea behind this product is good (essentially a disposable Ace bandage), the execution is poorly done. Due to my wounds oozing, I have ruined a pair of shorts due to the lack of absorbency from the bandage. In addition, I have to constantly adjust the bandage, as it is either shifting around or rolling up, rendering them useless.

In the long run, you would be better off investing in an Ace bandage or two. Ace bandages can be laundered, and while it is a pain in the butt to do with my wounds being what they are, the Ace bandage is more comfortable and generally a better all-around choice than this product.

(More customer reviews)I have tried it all - the roll on wax with strips, the wax you smear on and peel off, the wax you smear on and pull off with strips, the strips with wax already on them, and just plain ole plucking.

While I mastered the smear-it-on-pull-it-off-with-a-strip method, I always found I was out of strips, with a lot of wax left.Plus, it was troublesome to keep the wax at the correct temperature.

Finally, I tried these, and for the very first time, in all my plucking/waxing history, I had perfectly shaped, beautiful eyebrows WITH NO REDNESS OR PAIN!!(This includes dozens of trips to the spa where pain and redness occurred).There were only a couple of minutes of redness and tingling, and then it completely went away, and my eyebrows are perfect.Typically, because I have sensitive skin, my eyebrows would remain red and itchy/painful for a couple of days.

I'm thrilled to have found this product, and I hope everyone else loves it as much as I do so that it will stick around.It was the easiest, most pain-free method I have ever used, and I will never have ugly eyebrows again thanks to these!

Update on 3/16/2010:

I am still using these strips and have never been happier with an at-home eyebrow waxing product.I have to contest those who compare this to "scotch tape".That being said, you have to wash your face, freeing it of oil, and dry it thoroughly before using these.These will do the job completely as long as you do so.Great product.Still very happy!

(More customer reviews)I've tried these Mepiform pads, the Cica Care pads, and the Scar Away pads on my facial scar on a curvy part of my face.Because of the curviness and oiliness of my skin, I have trouble getting pads to stick for a whole day.The mepiform pads are aesthetically best because they are thinnest, the color matches my slightly tanned caucasian skin best, and the cut edges are neat.The scar away pads on the other hand have a shiny fabric texture that looks unnatural, are thicker, don't conform as well to the skin, and don't stick as well.Definitely go with the Mepiform pads over Scar Away, unless you really need to save money.

But when I'm doing active things that will make me sweat, the Mepiform pads don't stay on reliably so I use Band Aid Active Healing hydrocolloid pads instead (not made for scar treatment, but I think they have the same moisturizing effect that improves scar healing, and they hide the scar well).The Band aid products stick the best of any product I've tried, even when I sweat, but they are not as breathable so my skin gets irritated wearing them long term.

The cica care pads also stick much better than the mepiform pads, so I use them when I'm at home.They conform much better to curvy body parts, and I think the gel pulls up sunken scars better.But the Mepiform moisturize a bit more than Cica Care, which probably prevents keloids better.

With all these pads be aware that how the retailer stores them is important; I ordered my mepiform pads from a different online retailer and they sent me a sheet that already had big air bubbles underneath, and which didn't stick well.Another pad from the same warehouse had the same issue.But finally they sent me a mepiform pad from the same lot but from a different warehouse, and it had good sticky adhesive.I suspect the one warehouse either stored them too long or too hot.

Overall if you're going to use just one scar pad for all situations, I'd go with the Mepiform, which is also probably best for reducing keloids.The Cica Care pads last longer, stick longer, and may raise sunken scars better, but are more prone to being knocked off when something brushes up against them, and they are ugly.I use the Mepiform pads when I'm in public, and the Cica Care pads when I'm at home.

Seca 700 Physician's Balance Beam Scale with Height Rod Review

(More customer reviews)If you are looking at purchasing a physician's balance beam scale, you understand they are more accurate, repeatable, and durable than other types of scales and over the long run should be cheaper than replacing the regular strain gauge and digital bathroom scales every few years.You have three brand choices:Detecto, Health-o-meter, and Seca.Price isn't a consideration because careful shopping reveals less than a 15 dollar price difference between these three brands when one compares the equivalent models.Before choosing, I searched the net for reviews and information.Finding little, I contacted 7 companies which sell them (5 sold all three, 2 didn't sell Detecto) and 2 firms which calibrate & repair medical scales.I asked each which scale they would purchase for their own home and why.On to the review:

Detecto looked like a winner out of the gate.It is the only brand made in the U.S.A.However, looking at pictures I found on the net, the fit and finish did not appear to rise to the level of the other 2 brands.Additionally, no one I contacted recommended Detecto.The eliminating factor:Detecto has reduced their warranty from the industry standard 2 years to 1 year.Folks, this happens when the 2-year warranty is costing them too much money and it doesn't speak well for their quality.

The Health-o-meter brand is owned by Sunbeam and is made in China.Fit and finish are very good and it has a 2-year warranty.None of those I contacted had anything bad to say about them.One put it best when he said the Health-o-meter vs. Seca was basically a Ford vs. Chevy argument.I do not believe one could go wrong purchasing the Health-o-meter model.They are great scales and should serve the needs of anyone for many years to come.If you buy a Health-o-meter make sure to get the 402kl or the 402lb as they are the best of the line (the EXP is not as sturdy and the CERT model is not worth the extra money).

Seca is a German company and the 700 model is made in China.Fit and finish are excellent and it has a 2-year warranty (the 5-year warranty listed all over the web is not accurate, call Seca if you don't believe me).All 700s have integrated wheels (optional and costs extra on the other 2 brands).Additionally, everyone I contacted chose Seca over Health-o-meter.Most chose on the basis of its modern, less clinical appearance, several felt it would be more durable in the long run because it outweighs the other 2 brands by at least 10 pounds, and one said she had never had a Seca returned.

I purchased the Seca 700 `pounds only' model with integrated height rod (5 bucks extra and I liked the looks) and have had it for over a month.It arrived well packaged and took 20 minutes to assemble.It was perfectly balanced out of the box and the weight was dead-on.It is highly repeatable; the weight will remain the same no matter how many times you step on and off.The heavy extra-wide cast iron base and the inherent strength of the round column design speak well for long-term durability.The balance beam is constructed of thick aluminum and is very robust.The beam has 1/8 of a pound graduations (the other brands 1/4 of a pound), is easily read, and the design of the beam `pointer' makes it very easy for one on the scale to tell when the beam is level and the weight is accurate.I also like the sleek appearance.Bottom line:I prefer the Seca 700 and recommend it without reservations to anyone.I'm very satisfied with my decision.

Unless you have access to more ether to replace lost solvent with do yourself a favor and don't buy this product. The medicine itself works fine but unless you can find it in a tube you will need a new bottle every two-four weeks. It takes up to 12 to work so doing this is really expensive.

If you already bought this product, don't use the brush it came with. Since even a few seconds without a lid leaves you with a sticky mess you simply can't remove the lid long enough to use the attached brush. Also keep the cap sealed as tightly as possible.

Curad Cast Protector Adult Arm 2 ea Review

(More customer reviews)I have 2 casts on and used these for showering. No tape, no plastic rings no nothing made me think it would not work but everyone here said they liked it, well I see why. This waterproof covering has a smaller diameter hole than your limb which also has an elastic band built into the hole to shrink back to its size and it simply just works perfectly, honest. The last thing I would want as a 56 yr old father of two is to tell someone with a cast on the wrong advice. I would though make sure any sharp points that your cast might have on it - you know that would "catch" on your sweater - are covered with tape to make sure you dont snag the elastic banded opening. Mine did and nothing happened to the cover because it so strong of a material -but just a heads up. The picture on the box and the ad does not make this product seem impressive but if you asked a band ad company to make something simple, strong, and easy to put on with one hand for the shower...this is the product. Honest.Stuart

Curad Telfa Non-Stick Pads with Adhesive 2" x 3" 20 ea Review

(More customer reviews)I had a box of the previous version of these, and liked them quite well. One pad would do for 24 hours if it stayed dry, and could even be removed and reapplied with the adhesive continuing to hold. The pad was woven cotton, and didn't get pesky fibers stuck in the wound.

This new version says "comparable to Telfa pads" on the box, as pictured, whereas the old one had real Telfa (as the item title says). I'm guessing the item for sale is as pictured, and the title is incorrect.

Anyway, I don't have an opinion on whether the imitation Telfa covering is better, worse or the same as real Telfa. But the adhesive doesn't hold as well, won't hold if you remove and reapply it, and the pad is spun cotton fiber that gets everywhere. You'll have to change these new ones more often.

That said, it's important to know that greater absorption may be necessary in some situations (such as post-op), so be sure to ask a medical professional who knows the nature of the wound you're dealing with to make sure this is the correct type of gauze pad to buy. (More customer reviews)Every time you remove adhesive tape from skin, it takes skin cells with it.This stuff (Cavilon Barrier Film Wipes), which is very easy to use, provides a layer for the tape to take instead of skin.You wipe a wet sponge applicator on the skin, and the fluid dries to a clear plastic coating.
Personal story:A couple of years ago, someone close to me was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.Given that, she has been very lucky (living almost normally now, and cancer-free for 2 years now), but her medical life since her Whipple surgery has included reconstructive surgeries whose complications have resulted in chronic wounds, hence the need for lots of dressing-changes -- including those with tape-adhered gauze on top and the VAC therapy kind (adhered with a large adhesive sheet, changed twice a week).She's in her late 70's, and the cancer surgery complications left her skin somewhat fragile.
We found out about barrier film wipes (Cavilon brand) from the homecare nurse who came to change her VAC dressing; they also had them (Allkare brand) at the wound care center at a local hospital we visited.There's a spray version of this product, by the way, but the wipes give more control of application (keeping barrier substance out of the wound, for example).
These wipes may seem a little pricey, but they're well worth it, to save fragile skin from irritation which can cause pain and possibly lead to skin break-down and even infection.
I prefer the Cavilon brand, which has in each packet a one-use tiny sponge applicator.Another family member prefers the Allkare brand because the applicator, which is more like a tiny square of thick paper-towel, is "jucier".
Be advised:whichever brand you use, there will be a build-up of residue left where no tape is put over the applied barrier film/fluid, so that has to be dealt with.You can peel it off (easier if you first apply an extraneous layer of the barrier fluid), but it can flake, so you have to take care to keep the plastic flakes/particles out of the wound area.They make wipes of adhesive-tape remover that can be used to remove this barrier film residue also.Allkare makes one that you have to cleanse the skin after using.Triad makes one that does not require cleansing afterwards.They seem to me to work about equally well.
(Of course, if regular showering/bathing is allowed, the plastic residue should come off easily with a little soap&water and gentle scrubbing.)
