HealthOMeter 349KLX Digital Medical Scale Review

HealthOMeter 349KLX Digital Medical Scale
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We wanted a very accurate and consistant scale for home use.Our first attempt was the Tanita HD 372 (reviewed and given one star) that was returned to Amazon.

Webought 349KLX as a much less expensive alternative to the Tanita BWB model which also has an easy to read,wall-mountable display.

The 349KLX runs on one standard 9v battery and has a lit display. We recommend velcro tape rather than the included metal mount to put the display at eye level. The 349KLX is accurate and consistant and weighs to within 2/10ths of a pound. If, for any reason, the display doesn't show "0" when turned on, it has a tare to reset the balance zero. There is also an automatic shutoff to save the battery.

Unlike some scales that lock your weight after a few seconds, this unit continues to adjust until it reaches an equilibrium.

We cannot evaluate this scale for heavy (doctor's office) usage but it is excellent for home use.

Seca 700 Physician's Balance Beam Scale with Height Rod Review

Seca 700 Physician's Balance Beam Scale with Height Rod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are looking at purchasing a physician's balance beam scale, you understand they are more accurate, repeatable, and durable than other types of scales and over the long run should be cheaper than replacing the regular strain gauge and digital bathroom scales every few years. You have three brand choices:Detecto, Health-o-meter, and Seca.Price isn't a consideration because careful shopping reveals less than a 15 dollar price difference between these three brands when one compares the equivalent models. Before choosing, I searched the net for reviews and information.Finding little, I contacted 7 companies which sell them (5 sold all three, 2 didn't sell Detecto) and 2 firms which calibrate & repair medical scales.I asked each which scale they would purchase for their own home and why.On to the review:

Detecto looked like a winner out of the gate.It is the only brand made in the U.S.A.However, looking at pictures I found on the net, the fit and finish did not appear to rise to the level of the other 2 brands.Additionally, no one I contacted recommended Detecto. The eliminating factor:Detecto has reduced their warranty from the industry standard 2 years to 1 year.Folks, this happens when the 2-year warranty is costing them too much money and it doesn't speak well for their quality.

The Health-o-meter brand is owned by Sunbeam and is made in China.Fit and finish are very good and it has a 2-year warranty.None of those I contacted had anything bad to say about them. One put it best when he said the Health-o-meter vs. Seca was basically a Ford vs. Chevy argument.I do not believe one could go wrong purchasing the Health-o-meter model. They are great scales and should serve the needs of anyone for many years to come.If you buy a Health-o-meter make sure to get the 402kl or the 402lb as they are the best of the line (the EXP is not as sturdy and the CERT model is not worth the extra money).

Seca is a German company and the 700 model is made in China.Fit and finish are excellent and it has a 2-year warranty (the 5-year warranty listed all over the web is not accurate, call Seca if you don't believe me).All 700s have integrated wheels (optional and costs extra on the other 2 brands).Additionally, everyone I contacted chose Seca over Health-o-meter.Most chose on the basis of its modern, less clinical appearance, several felt it would be more durable in the long run because it outweighs the other 2 brands by at least 10 pounds, and one said she had never had a Seca returned.

I purchased the Seca 700 `pounds only' model with integrated height rod (5 bucks extra and I liked the looks) and have had it for over a month. It arrived well packaged and took 20 minutes to assemble. It was perfectly balanced out of the box and the weight was dead-on.It is highly repeatable; the weight will remain the same no matter how many times you step on and off.The heavy extra-wide cast iron base and the inherent strength of the round column design speak well for long-term durability. The balance beam is constructed of thick aluminum and is very robust. The beam has 1/8 of a pound graduations (the other brands 1/4 of a pound), is easily read, and the design of the beam `pointer' makes it very easy for one on the scale to tell when the beam is level and the weight is accurate.I also like the sleek appearance.Bottom line:I prefer the Seca 700 and recommend it without reservations to anyone.I'm very satisfied with my decision.

Health o Meter HDL820-18 Digital Scale with LCD Review

Health o Meter HDL820-18 Digital Scale with LCD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm more than satisfied with this scale.I was concerned that I would have to buy a more expensive scale to get good accuracy (see reviews of other digital scales in this price range,) but I've tested it several times over several days, and my weight varies by 2 pounds or less over the course of the day.My first weigh-in of the day is pretty much the same as previous mornings, sadly.

The neutral color (grey) and glass would blend in well with just about any decor, and the LCD screen is easy to read, with 1.5 inch high numbers.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it creaks quite a lot when I step on it, even though I'm nowhere near its 330 pound maximum load. That problem is in my head more than in the scale: I don't think it's going to break, but it sounds like I've got two people standing on it at once--I'm not THAT fat, am I?

An added feature is that when I'm craving, I go into the bathroom and look at it, and know that it isn't going to fall for any of my excuses tomorrow morning. So the last piece of cake still sits in the fridge. The scale has intimidated me into not eating it.

Accurate, easy to read, easy on the eyes, and intimidating--I think it's a good deal.

7/12/2008 update: Two years after I bought this scale, I like it as much as I did when I first got it.

In fact, today I realized my mother needs a scale, and I bought this one for her.I threw in a Sudoku book and got free shipping. And I look like a very thoughtful daughter.;^)

But I got her this scale because I know that, even with her no longer perfect eyesight, she'll be able to read the numbers. And I know that after two years of daily use, this scale is still accurate.

Product Description:
The Health o Meter HDL820KD-18 Digital Scale with LCD provides the perfect way to track your weight goals, thanks to its fast, accurate measurement capability. Just step on the scale, and in seconds you'll have the information you need for your weight loss or weight maintenance program. Easier to read than old-fashioned dial scales, this scale takes the guesswork out of reading your weight by clearly displaying your information on a large LCD.
Battery: CR2032 Lithium-Ion battery Display: 1.3-inch LCD display Increments: 0.2 lb / 0.1 kg Max. weight: 330 lb / 150 kg Warranty: 5 years Functional, Streamlined Design Simplifies Your Life
Unlike old dial scales with tiny, difficult to decipher indexes, the HDL820KD has a 1.3-inch LCD and clear digital numerals that make reading your weight easy.
The scale itself has a slim design with a silver-tone platform and elegant transparent glass accents. Complementing any home decor, the scale is both striking and conveniently sized. It measures 13.4 x 12.7 x 2.7 inches and weighs 4.2 pounds, meaning that unlike bulky, unsightly dial scales, you will never need to store it away. With your scale in view, you will be more likely to measure your progress and reach your weight goals.
This unit runs on one long-life lithium battery (included). Replacing the battery is easy, and a digital readout lets you know when your battery life is low. And for peace of mind, the HDL820KD is covered by a five-year limited warranty.
Precise Measuring Capability for Accurate Results
The Health o Meter Digital Scale accurately measures weight in .2-pound increments up to 330 pounds. Such precise measurement makes reaching your weight goals easier, because it means you can learn to understand your weight variation patterns and track how your body responds to different foods, habits, and exercise.
When setting weight objectives for yourself, it is important to have an accurate starting point so you can correctly measure your results. Older bathroom scales featuring a spring action can become inaccurate as the mechanism wears out, meaning that your weight may be off by several pounds each time you step on the scale. The HDL820KD eliminates this problem by "zeroing out"--calibrating itself to begin precisely at zero for better accuracy and, ultimately, better weight control.
Before each weighing, use your foot to gently tap on the lower corner of the scale to calibrate. Once the scale has zeroed out, step on--your weight will be displayed in a matter of seconds. Your weight will continue to be visible for a short time until the LCD turns off automatically.
The Importance of Regular Weight Monitoring to a Healthy Lifestyle
Research has shown that people who regularly weigh themselves lose more weight and prevent more weight gain than people who weigh themselves infrequently. This is because weighing yourself more often can help you recognize your body's patterns of weight gain and loss and can help you modify your lifestyle before your weight becomes difficult to control.
Regular weight monitoring will help you learn about how your body responds to different foods, eating habits, and exercise. That means you can learn to understand your weight variation patterns so you won't get discouraged and halt your weight management progress. Also, frequent weighing will fuel your motivation for reaching your weight goals, keeping you on track and encouraged along the way.

Withings Wifi Body Scale Review

Withings Wifi Body Scale
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Withings Wi-Fi scale is a fascinating step forward in the use of Wi-Fi to share information for the consumer's benefit.

I purchased my scale from the Withings web site but it was shipped from their U.S. Amazon store. It appears to be one of the first scales to ship within the US as I received it in early October 2009.

After the scale is configured for your Wi-Fi network, and the account on the server is set up, the process of weighing goes like this: Step on the scale. The scale will fluctuate for a moment while adjusting to your weight. After a few moments, the scale should accept a weight, and then display a bar moving across the display from left to right as the data is uploaded to the server. When the bar display is complete, the scale then displays your Body Fat % and then displays your BMI. If the scale has a problem thinking that the person on the scale is not centered, there will appear an arrow in one of the corners where it believes there is too much weight and it would like you to adjust your weight away from that corner.

The scale is a pretty straightforward device and will not require any in-depth learning but some users might desire a user's manual as there is none beyond the slip of paper that instructs you how to insert the batteries. A pdf document that a user could download would be a great addition for those that would like to better understand what the capabilities are for the device and how they can make best use of the product. After all, this scale is not a cheap scale and most users who purchase it will be technically minded with curious wonderings beyond what is obvious. Withings does have an online forum for ongoing discussion and if you have a question, visiting the forums helps as there are always other users who are experiencing the same issues or have found an answer for something you may come up against.

The scale has the ability to recognize more than one user. There is an algorithm that the server uses to determine which user is on the scale as it expects each user to have a significantly different weight and/or body fat % composition than other users. If it can not detect which user is on the scale from 2 different users, the scale will show an arrow so that by adjusting the users balance on the scale, the user can indicate which user they are. If there are 3 or more users using the scale, this process will not work and the users must each 'claim' or 'refuse' the weight on the web site for their tracking. Unfortunately, having a single user claim that weight will not remove it from the other user's records and each other user must also remove the 'unknown user' weight.

Because I have an iPhone, I was intrigued by how I (or others that I allow) could watch my weight change and body fat changes over time. It is impressive how quickly the iPhone receives the weighing data and Withings has been smart to use a badge on the WiScale application to notify the user that new data has been received. I have not noticed any Alerts yet on the iPhone but they are aware of that capability given that the preference exists within the iPhone settings.

For the techies that like to take things to the next level, there is a capability to download a CSV delimited file containing your weighing history. The file is perfectly formatted to slide right into your Excel program.

There are a couple of things that I expect to see happen as Withings moves to version 2 of their software. Currently, there is no ability to upload data to the server so as to benefit from having historical data that you have accumulated prior to your Withings scale purchase. Manually entering historical data is limited in that the server does not accept data with the precision similar to what the scale records. Withings says that this will be fixed in a future update.

A feature that is missing is the ability to indicate that the user is an athlete and that the Body Fat should be analyzed with that significant difference in mind. Many users who choose a scale such as this might well be expecting this recognition by the software.

The Basal Metabolic Rate would also be a nice feature that may be included at a later time but is not currently calculated or shown.

Withings Scale Pros:
Attractive
Capable of ongoing improvements in features through firmware updates
iPhone application for ease of sharing your success
Capable of multiple users being tracked
Can be set for metric (kg) or imperial (lbs)
Very responsive to customer feedback

Withings Scale Cons:
Accuracy is limited to your typical home use scale.
Not the cheapest product that does this kind of analysis but one of the more innovative.

Executive bottom line: The scale has some fun potential but it should be recognized that technology does not necessarily bring about increased accuracy. I've rated this scale with 5 stars because it is what it appears to be, the design is beautiful and the scale uses technology in innovative ways. The scale has potential for becoming an an awesome product as Withings has the capability to enhance its current capabilities easily. Let's hope they continue to give us even more as time go on.
